The Model
Here is a digital illustration of another epic eighties wrestler known as ‘The Model’ Rick Martel. ‘The Model’ was handsome man and tremendous athlete, famed for his smooth moves both in and out of the ring. A ladies man of world renown, he even curated his own brand of cologne known as ‘Arrogance’ which he would proudly carry to the ring with him, spraying anyone whose odour offended his delicate nose.
Unfortunately, it seems that pretty much every member of the audience around the ring fell in to this category and he would often spray the entire crowd prior to getting in the ring. I think that’s what I liked most about this character, the utter disdain he showed for anyone he believed to be beneath him.
I wanted this piece to really highlight how aloof and unapproachable ‘The Model’ was whilst also allowing his trademark ‘Arrogance’ cologne and Model badge to be the main focus. I thought it would be fun if Rick was shrouded in the perfumed mist, giving the surreal impression that he was some kind of mystical and musclebound genie.
